Day 9 One day when Kore (Persephone) was gathering her flowers in the meadow, she noticed a beautiful Narcissus flower. As she leaned in to look at it, the earth beneath her opened up and she was swallowed into the Underworld. She was abducted by Hades, King of the Underworld, who was smitten with her. The Narcissus flower is named after another Greek individual in mythology- Narcissus, son of a river god. Unable to tear himself away from his reflection in a stream, he drowned. This is why it is said that daffodils grow in abundance by rivers and streams. Narcissus flowers are one of the flowers of the Chinese New Year (which starts this year on Friday), referred to as "water fairy flowers". They are also symbolic of good luck in Chinese cultures as well as in Welsh folklore. They are the official flower of the country of Wales.
